Fall Home Tour 2017

Possibly I should change the title of this post to "Ready for Fall."  You may remember I've been shopping for our cabin fixer-upper.  For the past year I've been acquiring furniture, bedding, kitchen supplies, and so forth, so we will be ready to move in when all the work is finished.  With that, our house is filled to the brim.  The living room is full, the downstairs guest room is full and things are spilling over into great room...it looks like a hoarder lives here!  Even so, I've decorated for fall and the main rooms we live in are ready for the season...so come on in!

I've kept things simple and have used things on hand, with the exception of a few fall scented candles.  Indian corn used for my fall front porch can be seen through the glass doors in the foyer.  I've also added a touch of the season on the hall tree.

On the hall tree a pumpkin spice candle was placed in a handmade pottery bowl, topped with twigs and a little chickadee, one of my favorite birds.  Placed around the candle are pine cones that were gathered from beneath the pine trees.  I love the scents of fall and a candle in the entry gives a soft glow.  A warm way to welcome folks who come to visit and the candle smells yummy!

In the keeping room I've placed a runner along the table with a candle centerpiece.  A glass hurricane is sitting in a small wreath and elevated on a cake pedestal with fall sprigs around the base.  Of course, in the hurricane is another fall scented candle which smells yummy!

The island and vent hood have been decorated too.

I am so in love with my antique copper horse that I had to leave it for fall.  The creamer and sugar dishes are part of my Metlox California Provincial Poppytrail collection.  The colors and roosters lend well to fall with some pine cones and fall flowers to add some extra color.

Remember this oil lamp?  There is an old oil lamp inside a lantern, a gift from my mother, and it has become one of my favorite things...it looks amazing in the evening when lit.  Just beside is a fall bird dish filled with tiny pumpkins and a pumpkin scented candle.  The wooden tray was a birthday gift from my cousin.

On the other side of the island are a couple of woodland squirrels, large pine cones and a pumpkin that has a light inside which looks nice in the evenings.

I look forward to cooler weather when the keeping room fireplace can be lit.  Oh my, I just realized something...

When moving on to the rest of the room I just realized that I haven't shared the new swivel rockers in the keeping room with you!  What...we've had them for almost two years?!  I guess with the fixer-upper and all...wow...can't believe I haven't shared these.  Well, here is the before:

We searched a l-o-n-g time for swivel rockers that:
1) would fit the space, some are so deep and wide,
2) smaller scale chairs that my mister would still feel comfortable in, and he does,
and 3) that were reasonably priced, this was the most difficult part.
After a year of searching my mister and I were walking through an antique shop and as we rounded the corner we saw these and they were only $35 each...score!  Of course, the fabric and upholstery charge was another matter, but it worked out well all considered.  We love them and they fit the space perfectly!

These fall pillows from Marshall's add the perfect pop of fall color.

We'll head into the great room next, but I have a story to share with you first.  Back in August I shared about my new red punched tin lantern, but what I didn't tell you about the other piece I brought home.  I've eyed this piece for years, it was in the shop for a long time.  It is a handmade by a Pennsylvania craftsman, no two alike, and his pieces are up there in price.
Quality.
One of a kind.
Beautiful.
Handmade colonial furnishings are expensive and this piece surely was.
And the price...y-i-k-e-s!  I can't even bring myself to type in the original price.
I could NEVER justify paying that, so I was thrilled this piece never sold and when the shop owner closed her shop doors she slashed the price.

I couldn't wait to pair this piece with the punched tin lantern as I began my fall decorating, so I started in the great room.  Remember, we are filled to the brim, so this room isn't usually so crowded.  Our regular furnishings have been scrunched up to the fireplace to allow for the new-to-me table and chairs set for the cabin.  There is nowhere else to put it...so...filled to the brim.

The chairs that go with the table have been placed here and there.

Beneath the lamp is a Willow Tree set, a gift from my cousin.  It is called, "Sisters by Heart", and that is exactly what we are.

Ok, back to fall decorating, a closer view of the great room, with the cabin table cropped out.  (I will be glad when things can go back to their place and be a little less crowded.)

One of my most treasured pieces is this 1850's jelly cupboard with its warm tones and worn patina.  Hanging just above is a primitive fraktur by Susan Daul and a theorem hand painted in oil by Ann Rea.  I do love this corner.

The shadows cast by the punched tin lantern is beautiful and I just love it paired with the chest and artwork.

The fireplace is simply decorated.  A fall garland is the backdrop for a pilgrim couple and a two handmade woolly sheep with little rusty bells sit just beside.  The crock is filled with porcupine quills and the white ironstone is filled with popcorn plant; a Charleston SC must have and oh-so southern.

I love this old blanket chest that we use our coffee table.  It was purchased a long time ago with gift money from my dad.

On the old chest in front of the couch is a basket with pine cones and foxes, mixed with a little branch from a crepe myrtle tree.  This sweet little dish was a gift from my aunt.

Just beside our front porch is a large Natchez crepe myrtle and one day I noticed this fallen piece.  I thought it was pretty, so I let it dry and used it in this vignette.

On end table is an ironstone platter filled with more pine cones gathered from beneath the pine trees.  I burn candles all year and the fall scents are my favorite.  This pumpkin spice candle has little acorns at the base.

When trying to take pictures, Ellie-Mae would resume to "her" special place time and time again, so I had to snap a few pictures to share with you.

Her favorite thing is to snuggle down between the couch and back cushion so she can rest her head on the end table...I know I'm partial but, oh how we love this girl!

The front porch is ready for fall, warts and all!  You can see it here.

Thanks so much for coming to visit!

  3. I just love your home and your classic styling, Cindy! The swivel chairs are gorgeous. I just started to have some of my better, but worn pieces recovered and I'm so happy to see the changes. Fabric is the first to go, while the frame is still quite sturdy, so this is the way I'm going! I LOVE all of your nature inspired fall touches. And the copper horse-beautiful.

I'm really excited to see how you style your cabin. Very smart to start collecting now, it will feel like home much sooner then! Do you have a move in date?

  5. First, that chandelier in the dining room is the one I've been stalking. Looks so lovely in your room! The chairs are perfect in the keeping room and that room is wonderful. And last, you've given me a new idea for my vintage candy dish when I saw yours with acorns and a candle! I could never think of a function for the candy dish...until now.

  6. What a fantastic fall tour of your home, Cindy. I love it all. Those chairs are great. They are like the ones we had from hubby's grandmother...a perfect size. I had them recovered, too, and on one of our moves ended up giving them to one of the kids.

I bet you are getting excited to be able to really settle into your cabin, too. Your kitchen, keeping room look lovely and that copper horse is awesome.

That is a GREAT piece of furniture/history you purchased when that store closed. I bet it was expensive but it is something you will pass down to someone someday...so worth it in the long run. xo Diana
