Stuff for the Mountain Cabin Fixer Upper & Red Tole Lamp

Wednesday, August 9, 2017

Last December, after we closed on our place in the mountains, the search was on.  Knowing we had 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living area, dining area, and a kitchen that would need to be furnished with everything from floor coverings to silverware...I got busy.  The last thing I wanted to do after the renovation is complete is to begin the search for furnishings, so I've been going to local antique shops, thrift stores and on FB yard sale sites, looking for everything from kitchen supplies to furniture that would go with the cabin feel I am going for and fit within my tiny budget.  I have learned that looking in advance ensures you find things you need for a much better price than having to make a quick purchase.

Before we get to all the stuff, I want to show you the pink daylilies blooming just above the creek in the mountains.  I think they are beautiful with their bright yellow center and ruffly edges.

We are eight months in on the mountain renovation and my house in NC is overflowing with stuff!  Stuff, stuff and more stuff!  We can barely walk in the living room at this point, the downstairs guest bedroom is full and even my great-room is being taken over by rugs!  The good news is, our general contractor is working on some things that once done we can begin putting things back together and moving a good bit of this stuff to its new home in the mountains.  Most of this has been acquired specifically for our place in the mountains, there are some things I already had on hand and friends have also given us some furnishings, which is SUPER nice and greatly appreciated!

My living room is overflowing with couches, end tables, cupboards, chairs, and more...

The great-room is where the rugs are being stored.

I have a thing for lamps and if you have been following along for any amount of time, you know my favorite color is red!  I especially like tole painted lamps and while out looking for furnishings this one caught my eye.  It was back in January when I first saw this lamp and eight months later it is still for sale in the same shop.  The price is way on up there which is why I didn't scoop it up!

A few months after seeing this one I was in a resale shop and found one for only $20!
It was a bit too bright with the white base trim compared to the creamy color on the shade, but it was the style I like and the price couldn't be beat.

Once home I touched it up with some AS dark wax which did just the trick.  After one coat...

I let the first coat dry a bit, buffed it and then added a second coat...

Ta-da!

This will most likely go in one of the bedrooms and I can't wait to decide which one!  What do you think?

The current projects on our fixer-upper:
patching the drywall damage from the electrical rewiring,
installing new drywall in the kitchen,
replacing doors and trim,
replacing a sagging beam in between the living and dining area,
and the kitchen is the largest project yet to be done but the window has been ordered...yippee!

Living 3 hours away has been a challenge, but we are so happy to know the demo phase is almost behind and we are really looking forward to adding finishing touches.

I hope you'll follow along to see how she turns out...see it all right here.

  1. Cindy, I was very excited to see this post! Oh my gosh, though, you had me laughing out loud at the stash of STUFF you're accumulating! My husband would go absolutely nuts if I did that (lucky you!). I would most likely be hauling it in my car, lol. I can't wait until you can style your cabin - it's going to be amazing.
You did a great job on the tole lamp! IF you're still dreaming of the one that's been in the shop for 8 mos, here's a tip: go back, and ask the store to call the dealer with an offer of 30% below asking (if you can live with that price). Offer to pay cash or check (it makes a difference to a dealer if the management takes a fee for processing credit cards, as is the case in our antique mall). If they say no, ask them for their best price.

  2. It's great that you are at this stage in moving into your gorgeous place in the mountains. I think it's absolutely genius to work on adding things slowly. You aren't impulsive and you can also buy seasonally. Fall is the best time to buy outdoor furnishings, etc,...you get the idea! All the best, keep us posted!!!

  3. What a mess for storage but it will be SOOOO worth it once you can start moving stuff up to the cabin. I know you must be champing at the bit to just start spending some real time there decorating and having fun---instead of working all the time.

Those mountain lilies are just gorgeous!! Hope you have a great Wednesday- xo Diana

  4. The dayilies are stunning! You have found beautiful items for your mountain home. Construction can feel like an eternal process, but when it's over, you will be ready to nest. 🌸🖼🛋💕

  5. This reminds me of when our cabin in VA was being built. Every weekend we went up to see the progress and hit the flea markets and yard sales. We had NO place top store anything at home so we rented a storage unit for a few months. It was like Christmas when we finally was able to move in...I has forgotten many of the purchases and it a fun surprise! Love the red lamp and your treatment look amazing. Now I am collecting a few things here and there for when we make the move to TN and build our farmhouse in the meadow! Can't wait to see the progress!
