Changes in the Guest Room

It is cold here in North Carolina.  Yesterday we had a little sleet and snow, today it is sunny and in the mid 40's, however tomorrow is when the fun is to begin.  The forecast for Friday is 28 degrees with freezing rain and Saturday 37 degrees with s-n-o-w.  I hope so!  I would like at least one good snow this winter.  I understand that might seem a bit silly to those of you who live with that white stuff all winter long; but we don't get a good snow often so it's a treat when we do!

Enough about the weather, let's get on to the changes in the guest room...

Farmhouse style guest room

It was fun pulling this colonial farmhouse style guest room together.  It took me a while to decide on what to use above the bed, but when I found these Ironstone dishes and vintage wrought iron piece at a local antique shop, I thought they would go well together.

A month or so later I was at the same shop when I found the second one.  It was in the same booth and identical to the first piece I found.  I'm not sure if it was there originally and I just didn't see it, but I'm so glad to have found it.

I added a little ribbon at the top to hide the wall anchor, but it's perfect for this spot just above the framed Scherencshnitte, a handmade gift from a friend.

I've had this wall mount hurricane lamp for a long time.  It's been in the garage waiting for the perfect spot and here it is!

My sister gave me a vintage wrought iron planter for Christmas.  She had it decorated with green ribbon and a frosty Poinsettia flower that were so pretty I've decided to leave them.

The first of November I bring all the plants on the screened porch in the house so they will survive the winter.  I must admit, sometimes it's hard finding a place for them.  Three plants have found a winter home in this room.

A Laua'e fern has been placed in the wrought iron planter and though its pot is too big for it, the added height allows the plants tendrils to drape down from the side without landing on the carpet.

Across the room a pothos plant has found a winter home on the secretary.

This sweet little antique doll was purchased at auction a long time ago.  I do love her sweet curls, hair bow and shoes.  She sits on an antique wicker potty chair with a little pillow to help her tushie stay cushy.

This bench used to be on the other side of the bed and just underneath the window.
When the plants came indoors I had to move things around a bit.

On the dresser is an asparagus fern which seems to be doing well in this spot since this room gets a lot of bright morning sunlight.

I do love the textures in this room.
Handmade quilts, pillows and a ticking kitty too.

When I found the second vintage wrought iron piece to hang on the wall beside the bed, I also found this painting by Folk Artist Susan Daul which hangs just above the bench.

Hope
like the gleaming tapers light
adorns and cheers the way
and still as darker grows the night
emits a brighter ray.

This is our pretty girl Bella.  She's a blue point Himalayan and this is her favorite place to nap.

  8. Hi Cindy, I so enjoy seeing your Colonial decorating style, it is always so pretty! I like your wrought iron planter and the magazine rack I see in the background is nice too. And what about that beautiful antique secretary, you know I have an eye for Victorian! It is a lovely piece. I see you have a candle screen on the top of it. May I ask what you have in the screen area. Needlepoint or something else? I would love to see it up close sometime.
Your Bella is so gorgeous, those crystal blue eyes, wow!

  11. Your guest room is lovely! Makes me think I need to redo ours, moving it out of its tired country look and into some fresh, updated finery. Love the plates and wrought iron over the bed--I'll tuck that idea away for when I do the makeover. Thanks for sharing!
