Kindness,
good will towards men,
selflessness,
anticipation,
reflection,
celebrating the birth of Christ,
a renewed hope and excitement for this beautiful gift of life.
These are just some of the things that make Christmas such a special time of year.
All spring and summer long I lovingly nurture a few things dear to my heart
and
then
autumn
arrives
and
I
find
myself
We have a number of Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus that grace us with their gorgeous blooms.
Three are very special; one belonged to my maternal grandmother, one belonged to my paternal grandmother and one is from my husband's uncle.
Two of the largest were placed on the kitchen island so we could enjoy them as much as possible.
Each year the plants keep getting bigger and bigger.
A glass container is turned upside down and placed on a doily
and
then
a cake stand is placed on top of the glass dish
in
hopes
of
giving
the
plants
as
much
height
as
possible.
Even so, many of the blooms rest on the island.
Every other year or so I replant in a larger pot and fertilize with Osmocote.
The years I don't replant, I sprinkle a little more fertilizer on top of the soil.
Early spring through late fall they are kept on the screened porch in filtered sunlight and moved indoors once the temperatures begin falling in the low 40's.
Each year I eagerly await their arrival and they never disappoint!
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

ReplyDeleteI am gone from the blog world for a bit. You can read about it on my blog when you get the chance. Just wanted to wish you a very Merry Christmas - xo Diana
I'm surprised you have come up with a decorative support cage for those lovelies.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Christmas cacti and some belonged to other family members. I have one as well. Mine starts to bloom late November and will bloom one more time usually in January.
ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful, Cindy! I have one that is at least ten years old, and the last time I repotted it, it divided itself into two pieces. I didn't think much of it and went ahead with planting both pieces into the larger pot. Now I get at least 2 sets of blooms....one side bloomed just before Thanksgiving, and now the other side is full of buds just about to pop. I've even had one or both sides bloom again in early Spring. Unfortunately, the best light for my beauty is in our bathroom in front of the glass block window. Oh well, hubby and I get to enjoy often!
