Colonial Farmhouse Guest Room Reveal

It's been fun pulling the guest room together and it's finally finished!

I wanted this room to feel warm and cozy with colonial farmhouse touches.  I also wanted to furnish it by shopping the house; spending as little as possible by using what I already have and hoping it comes together well.

I didn't paint the room or purchase curtains.  The walls were already a pale yellow with red drapes hanging, so that was my starting point; bright walls and curtains in my favorite color...red!

Antique Iron Bed in the Colonial Farmhouse Guest Room

First thing to do was asking the mister to fetch the antique iron bed being stored in the garage.  Painted gold, this bed was passed down from my aunt, to my mother and then to me.  I've had it for many years but had nowhere in the house to use it until now.  With no mattress and box spring mother came to the rescue by giving me a set she no longer needed.

The white matelasse coverlet, pillow shams and sampler pillow were gathered from the linen closet and work perfectly with the red patchwork quilt previously purchased at auction.
I really like the reds in the quilt, pillow and curtains and the warmth it adds to the room.

I couldn't resist taking a few pictures of Bella as she settles in this new spot for a cat nap.

There were a couple of new things purchased.
Two bed skirts, one ruffled and one eyelet.  I was planning on taking one of them back to the store after deciding which I liked best, but the fabric on both was almost see-through, so I decided to layer the ruffled skirt beneath the eyelet.

While strolling through an antique mall I found a few things to use in a grouping above the bed.
Two ironstone platters, two ironstone plates and a vintage wrought iron piece to go in the middle.

Over 18 years ago I found this dresser on the side of the road.  The drawer fronts were not attached to the drawers and it was in horrible shape.  The mister fixed the drawers and for a while we used it on the screened porch.  After a good cleaning, scraping off the peeling veneer, painting with Louis Blue AS chalk paint, a couple coats of wax and a set of $6.99 glass knobs from Marshall's...this little dresser has a new home.

I gathered some dried hydrangea and a few mahogany pods to fill this tree bark basket.  Wrapping some sheer ribbon around the handle, I tied a bow at the top to hang the basket in front of this antique gold mirror that I painted blue.

This side table used to be in the keeping room.  In the guest room, I am using it as a bedside table, just beneath this wall mount hurricane lamp that has been stored in the garage.  I've been waiting for the perfect spot to use it and I think this is it.  The swing arm is nice so when reading in bed it can be moved closer to the bed or farther away depending on how much light you need.

The handmade Scherenschnitte was a birthday present from a dear friend; "Friendship is the rarest of all gifts."  I shared about how the side table candle holder came together here.

Beneath the window is a small wooden settee done in red and white checks, with a cat pillow handmade by using striped ticking fabric and button eyes.

The cupboard turned out great after removing lots of spattered paint and giving it a good waxing.
The painting above the cupboard was done by a friend of my father's and is of his childhood home place.  The three Flower Ladies watercolors just to the left were done by Charleston SC artist Gaye Sanders Fisher.

In the chair is another sampler pillow and folk art cat with three babies in her pockets.

When I saw this secretary for sale at a consignment shop, it was love at first sight.  The shelving was so pretty and I liked the thought that guests could have a place for their computers while visiting as well as drawer space for clothing.   My hope was that it would still be at the shop when the lowest price was reached and lucky me...it was!
The secretary started out at $325 and I brought her home for the lowest price ~ $165.

Above the secretary hangs another Scherenschnitte, "Never forget to be truthful and kind, write them deep within your heart."  On the top shelf is an ironstone dish filled with dried hydrangea and a framed needlepoint.

The sun is going down and the guest room is filling with evening shadows; Bella is still snuggled in her spot.  Night-night!

I am so happy with the way the guest room turned out!

We've had two sets of family in town visiting over the past few weeks and those staying in this room have said it is comfy and cozy...mission accomplished!

  6. Cindy- You put a lot of thought and time into making everything just perfect in your guest room...from the hand-me-down bed to the doubled skirting..it all looks great. Love that secretary, too. What a find that was!!! I have one in the garage I need to get at --but I am going to paint the one I have..not something I would always do.
The best accessory though is sweet Bella! She is just so cute and looks right at home--like you fixed the room just for her! xo Diana

  11. Oh Cindy, it's BEAUTIFUL!! I love it all! The sampler pillows are charming, and so is the red quilt with flowers. The chest you painted turned out great, and I love the secretary too. I have those same black boxes on the bottom shelf of your cupboard -- not the one in the middle, but the other two. :) Every item you've put in here is just so pretty, and it all adds up to a cozy room. The best part is that you were able to shop the house for everything.

    Have a great week!

    Hugs,

    Denise
