In the Laundry Room...

Wednesday, September 2, 2015

Since finishing the kitchen I've done very little in the laundry room.

I can't believe that I pretty much just walked away from this room.
I mean, it is just off the kitchen and very visible, so what's taking me so long?

laundry room

This room had dark paneling which took me over a week, from dawn to late night, to paint!
I tackled it as soon as the kitchen remodel was finished, so I was already exhausted with still so much to unpack and get settled, but the dark paneling in the laundry just had to go!  So, I jumped right in and had NO IDEA just how labor intensive it was going to be!

First there was the cabinetry...
painting the dark stained cabinets with Kilz, both inside and out,
then the cabinet doors too, both sides,
followed by it all being painted again with two coats of Chantilly Lace by BM.

Next were the walls...
covering the dark paneling with Kilz by rolling it on the flat areas and then having to hand brush it in every groove.  Followed by several coats of Wickham Gray by BM, rolled on the flat areas and then brushed on in every groove.

Painting the laundry room
was
such
a
HUGE
job
and
I
was
j u s t
p l a i n
TIRED
of the laundry room!
(and did I mention that I hate to paint rooms and cabinets!)

Besides painting the room all we've done is moved back in the...
washer and dryer,
an antique bench so the cat food is elevated (so our pup Ellie-Mae won't help herself to it),
and we've hung the shelf back up with some of my figurines back in their place.

There is much still to do:

-Choose cabinetry hardware
-Figure out what to do with the closet; do I put the original doors back on or not?  And there is a need to decide on the best configuration for closet storage.
-Also needs a little pretty!  What pieces should I re-hang on the walls or should I just start fresh?

I was so tired of this room that I never even got around to re-hanging the paper towel holder!

Know
why?

One
guess...

it
needed
to
be
painted!

This dark color was fine on dark paneled walls
but
not
for
the
newly
painted
gray
walls!

And see those silver screws...I need a plan for covering them!

I don't know about you, but I am always in the laundry room!

Doing the obvious...laundry,
but also the cats are fed in here,
my floor cleaning supplies are in the closet,
the kitty litter is in this room and it seems I'm always cleaning that out!
The sink is used all the time to clean things I prefer not to do in the kitchen.

Considering
I
use
this
room
as
much
as
I
do
I have r-e-a-l-l-y missed not having paper towels in here!
Such a basic item and one that I use very often, I just hadn't taken the time to paint the holder until now!

laundry room just off the kitchen

Using AS Paris Gray and a little wax, it's finally done!

The space between the cabinetry and faucet is narrow, so I've always had to hang this paper towel holder upside down.

No matter, it works just fine!

And look...no shiny silver screws!

I took small pieces of cotton,
dabbed them in the chalk paint,
and then placed the cotton in on top of the screws...ta-da!

So sweet friend...
have you put off anything because you are just plain exhausted
or because your to-do list is w-a-y too long?

  1. It looks great, but I agree that kind of paint job can really bring out the procrastinator in me.

  2. Sounds like an awful lot of work, but it looks wonderful! The towel rack turned out great, too! I need to repaint my dining room. It's a challenge because of all the woodwork/trim. I've repainted it three times. The last time I was trying to lighten it up and used a color that's too blue, and looks more like a "bedroom" color. I'm "living with it" for now! :) ~Rhonda

  3. Your laundry is looking pretty and inspiring. We bought our new-build house almost 5 years ago with cottage green cabinets that I hate. I've been meaning to age them down and stain them darker all these years. Looking at yours may get me moving.

  5. My list is long... and I'm ALWAYS exhausted. Your laundry room looks great, from what I can see of it, but I would expect nothing less.

  6. Your hard work has paid off because the room is gorgeous! How often can you say a laundry room is gorgeous?! Mine's not! I feel you pain with the painting because when we moved to our house the kitchen was all knotty pine. I love the cottage feel but it was a mess and too expensive to repair. I think I used 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint to cover, and I did not do the insides of the cupboards. I love my white kitchen but I had to repaint again just recently after 17 years....not bad. And not as much work! Because of that I have put off stripping wallpaper and painting my linen closet area. I will try to tackle that this winter.

  8. It looks so pretty, Cindy! I don't know if you have yet uttered the words, "It was a lot of work but so worth it!"....I'm guessing that statement may have to wait a bit longer! I really like the skirted sink and your sweet little figurines on the shelf.

And to answer your question about putting things off.....well, yes, I am putting quite a few things off for the next several months for obvious reasons!

  14. Hi Cindy! It looks wonderful! Love the colors you chose. The paper towel holder looks great too! I was going to suggest Rub 'n Buff for the screws but it looks like you found the solution. Love it that you have all of those cabinets and a closet too! Your skirted sink looks so pretty. Love your pretties on your shelf.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)
