A Favorite Place

Thursday, May 28, 2015

If you drop by to see me in the spring or summer

you'll more than likely find me in the garden,

one of my favorite places to be!

Out by the well house the purple iris are blooming.
There is purple bearded iris in the garden too, but they have already faded.
These beauties are Iris filifolia.

Bearded iris have large flowers with ruffled edges and thick leaves, however the filifolia leaf is narrow and the flower dainty with very little ruffle.

The urns and other containers in the courtyard have been filled with lantana, my go-to plant.
Lantana is the perfect southern annual,
it can take the hot temperatures and they bloom like crazy through late fall.
Not always, but sometimes, this annual survives the winter and comes back in the spring.

I used pink in the large urns.  They go well with the pink knockout roses along the garage.

There is such dimension of color in this lantana; hot pink to a bit of yellow.

Since the pink lantana has a touch of yellow, I planted a few yellow lantanas too.
The yellow colors range from lemon yellow to white.

Another great reason for using lantana ... the hummingbirds love them!

Little touches are tucked here and there in the courtyard,
like this little birdbath and girl statue.

The peonies have been beautiful this spring.
As the sun sets in the evening, these beauties just shine!
You can see more of the peonies here.

Spring is such a beautiful time of year.
I just wish the flowers lasted longer, don't you?

  3. I'm a California native transplanted to Texas 10 years ago. Our last house was in the heart of Texas and got less snow and less cold freezing weather. Our lantanas thrived and came back every year. Now we're NE Texas and last year's lantanas are sticks. Now, after reading your informative post, I know I need to pull them and replace them every year here. So, thanks for the great info!

  10. I love my gardens, too. Yours are so pretty, I can see why you love the time you spend there! What kind of mulch do you use? Here in MO the usual choice is chipped tree/bark. Yours looks like a type of grass. It's really pretty and adds an interesting dimension.
