We’ve been on the road a lot here lately so the yard needs some attention. With a few pretty days ahead I thought I would tend to some weeds, the pond, and as you can imagine the list goes on and on.
I have found that being out-of-doors can be quite intriguing, I mean you just never know what you may see!
For instance…
We have a large white crepe myrtle growing at our front entry. You can only see the base of it here because at this angle it is difficult to capture the whole tree in the camera lens, so let me move over a bit…
Here we go, now you can see it better…
Yup, it is pretty big!
A few limbs needed to be tidied up in the crepe myrtle and magnolia trees so I grabbed the clippers, gloves and a ladder. I trimmed the magnolia first…
but before trimming the crepe myrtle I wanted to show you something…
See this limb in the crepe myrtle tree? Well, it starts way down here…
and has grown up and up…
and somehow this limb managed to grow right thru another limb!
Several times in the past we have noticed trees having two limbs growing too close together, leaning and rubbing against each other, and after a period of time one limb grows to encase the other limb. But this really looks like one grew right through the other, pretty interesting huh!

Crape Myrtles can grow very large, very quickly. We had a grouping of three that were manageable, but we had one up close to our house in Birmingham, that got so big, including its base that it really needed to be removed, but I just couldn't bring myself to do that. Your yard looks lovely. Be careful on that ladder.

ReplyDeleteCindy your front yard is stunning!! We have a crape myrtles in our yard, they're my hubby's favorite. He would love if we could get them to grow that big, ours stay in bush form.

Your yard is so pretty, Cindy. That is amazing, isn't it, when those limbs encase each other? I love it. I also love the banyon trees in the South where the roots grow down from the limbs. Mother Nature is truly amazing- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteNever saw that happen before. Those trees sure do grow fast and big. We had one in the front of our porch and I had to have Mike remove it and replace it with the Japanese Maple. We did move it to the side of the house and it never did thrive:( Our neighbor has some gorgeous ones though that I get to look at.

I have never seen anything like this! I wish we could grow Crepe Myrtles here, and magnolia trees! They are gorgeous! Your yard is so beautiful, do you have outside help at all, it's just perfect! :)

Hello Cindy, I have seen that before, it is an awesome, amazing sight. It is a good time to trim back and to shape trees and bushes - before the leaves fall. That caterpillar is awesome! I so need to pay some attention to my garden - now that the rains have passed the weeds have made themselves at home! Your garden is gorgeous - you've inspired me! What a gorgeous tree! We have a bright pink crepe myrtle that we have never trimmed. It just grows and grows.

ReplyDeleteI love crepe myrtle trees.......and yours is very pretty and unusual with those neat branches, don't you just love how things in nature do the most interesting things, I love how grapevine makes those lil curlyque things,
and I saw on national geographic that God designed them to do that so when they attached to something else they
acted like springs that would give when the wind blew, so it didn't tear them away from what they were attached to, God's creation is just mind blowing!
I worked outside this morning too, and I saw a number of rotting leaves, but they are so delicate and fragile
and beautiful, sort of lacy looking but not much left but the outside edge and the stem....very cool. Also saw those lil sugar ants all over my porch (Grimace) they have found the kitty food, and it looks like an
interstate hwy of ants............fascinating how they find these things, but also how they get to them.
I put her food up on the table so they don't get into it anymore, and now they have found a way to get up
there tablecloth and all............beats all I have ever seen........guess she is gonna be eating inside from
now on, but she doesn't like that accept for in the winter time, she likes her food out there where she can
have it anytime she wants it, cause she likes the heat evidently. Don't ask me why??? I am dying..........lol

ReplyDeleteWell I've never seen a branch grow "through" another!!! Love the Crepe Myrtle. We can grow them here in Queensland, Australia but they don't flower for more than a few weeks. Lovely garden, good for the soul.

ReplyDeleteCan I share my nature stroll discovery too. Just noticed two maple trees that are regular maple trees. They are on either side of the walk and somehow the newer branches are producing variegated leaves. Their tops are more white and green while the bottoms are all green. It's here in Sweden in a historic walk/park across from where we live.
