Keepsakes & Special Friends

Keepsakes.

Special treasures that make my heart happy.  I’d like to share a few with you…

A sweet pup!

When I was a little girl, this pup sat on a shelf at my Granny’s house.  I have loved it for as long as I can remember.  My uncle John loved this pup too and Granny knew it, so when she passed away it was left to him.  A few years ago I was surprised with a special note and this pup, a gift from my uncle John.  Such a treasure!

The pup is a planter and when adding a plant I noticed something written on the bottom…

It was a special moment as I thought about this pup, costing less than $2 and being priceless to me!

Granny’s electric tea pot was passed to my aunt Janie.  A couple of years ago I was surprised with a special gift from her, Granny’s teapot…I was thrilled!

A special friend…

Most Saturday mornings, Mr. Heart and I go out for breakfast at a restaurant down the street.  One Saturday, about 3 years ago, I noticed this sweet little lady being seated in a booth near us and the tears began to well up in my eyes.  Her skin tone, hair and smile reminded me so much of my Granny, so I had to meet her.  I’m happy to say that we’ve been great friends ever since!
I’d like you to meet my sweet Miss B…

003

She will be 93 this year, such a precious lady!  Can you see the resemblance to my Granny?!
I love spending time with her and before Christmas I invited her over for lunch and to visit.  I also had a little something special for her from me…

006

Well, she had something for me too.  A couple of keepsakes that I will treasure forever!

This sweet chicken egg cup…

She had two of them, giving one to her son and one to me.  Perfect for toothpicks, don’t you think…

and knowing my favorite color is red, she wanted me to have this…

We came up with a great use for this beautiful dish.  Since we have quite a few magnolia trees in our yard, Miss B and I think this would be the perfect dish for some fresh cut magnolia blossoms…can’t wait for Spring!

No magnolias blooming now, but we do have some pansies I can share with you...

Here's the story of Granny's favorite dishes & puddin' pie written in 2011.

I’d love to hear about your keepsakes and special friends…do share!

And if you will, please keep Miss B in your prayers.  She’s recently had back surgery and is still in a good bit of pain.  Thank you!

Blessings,

  5. Lovely post and it reminds me of a few treasures I have from my family. Like your puppy planter, my family treasures didn't cost much, but are priceless to me. Hugs and have a great Sunday. Thanks for sharing your friend Miss B. How exciting to be 93. Please give her a hug for me..if she doesn't mind a "hug" from a stranger. :)

  8. She really DOES resemble your Granny!!! How nice that you went over to her and a friendship was born! Love that cute hen dish and the red one will be bEAUTIFUL with magnolias. Just today I found the loving cup that was my hubby's Grandfathers. It was nowhere to be found since we moved. YEAH!!!! Handed down things are priceless, I agree. XO, pinky

  9. Cindy your post brought such joy to my heart as this generation do not seem to care about the elders the way we did when growing up.
I never had a grandmother close by and to this day I have no lovely stories to relate as you do. I only saw my grandmother twice in my life; my father's mother. We never lived close (in different states) and people didnot travel like today at that time. My mother's mother died when my mother was a little girl.
My dear one and I have/are celebrating our 60th year of marriage and we have one dear grandson and his wife who are special and another granddaughter who was not in our life (various reasons on the part of her parents) but now that she is married she decided (her husband told her 'you have grandparents and you do not see them?') and we are so joyful to have them now in our life with their little smiling daughter.
May your days always be blessed,
    Sylvia Faye

  12. Wow, Mrs. B. does look like your grandmother! I will say a special prayer for her. I do think magnolias would be so pretty in that bowl. I love special keepsakes like yours. Maybe later this spring you could host a link party for special keepsakes {hint, hint}.... ;P

  14. This brought tears to my eyes as we have just moved and I have been sorting....lots of keepsakes from my mom and precious MIL who are in heaven together. No one can understand what draws us to certain special items, but there are so many special memories. My granddaughter said when she came to the new house...Oh, you have great grandmas candy dish. I told her she could have that one someday. Love these special stories. Glad you have made a new friend,

  15. Hi Cindy,
Your sweet friend looks adorable, and she does look a lot like your grandmother, very pretty lady, and looks like such a sweetie, and bet she enjoys have a young woman friend as much as you enjoy her.
I used to have a sweetheart like that across the street from me, and she was like a grandmother to my children,
she never had any children of her own, so she sort of adopted us. Our street has never been the same for me since her passing over 10 years ago. She always had something nice or encouraging to say to us. such a precious lady. Great is her reward in Heaven I am sure.............

Loved that beautiful red dish that was your grandmothers I think you said, and that cute lil chicken dish
with the toothpicks, so cute. I am like you in that way, things like that have very special meaning to me too.

Well, you have a delightful Monday my friend,
    Blessings, Nellie

  17. Hi Cindy! I've never seen an electric tea pot! How sweet this was your grannys! You are the kindest one to have reached out to the little lady and now you're friends. More people should be like you and love older people. I understand that so many are so lonely! God bless you, Cindy.

  21. I have quite a few very special Grandma keepsakes, and a vintage figural planter collection. I have some dog planters too but not your sweet puppy. Thanks for sharing!

  22. What a sweet post! I think it's wonderful that you became friends with this nice woman. She really does resemble your Granny and you! How sweet that she gave you those gifts. I love red too so my eyes got big when I saw that piece! I do have a few keepsakes from various family members. Most came to me after they passed. I wish I had more places to display everything. I think it's wonderful that your aunt and uncle shared those two items with you. It's easy to have these things disappear.

  23. It is nice that you received some things of your Grandmother's that you treasure. Miss B looks like a sweet lady, and to have back surgery at her age is really something. You are kind to have made this lady's acquaintance and become a friend to her.

  24. Prayers will go immediately for this lovely lady, who does look like your granny! I love your sentimental post and the pretty treasures you got from your "new granny." Your aunt and uncle's things are such a treasure too! Yes, we all get things from our loved ones after they're gone, but I guess that's what heirlooms are. The pansies are so lovely too! Thank you for your sweet comments on my new finds, I can see my two daughters with my finds someday too, lol! Big hugs,
    FABBY

  25. So sweet - I am all about surrounding myself with sentimental items as well and you sure have some special ones! Take care, Laura

  26. I love that you surround yourself with those sweet treasures! That is what makes a home to me. My husband and I are getting to the age where, occasionally, we discuss "sizing down". However, every time we do, I just want to cry. How on earth does one decide what keep and what to leave behind? Almost everything in my home has a story and is precious to me! I did manage to give my son (the only grandson) my dad's pottery. So far, that is as far as I have gotten - lol!! Love the story about your new friend. She does look so much like your grandmother!

  27. I think it is so wonderful, Cindy, that you took the time and made the effort to turn a stranger into a friend. She truly does look so sweet and so much like your Gramma. Sniff, sniff.....now I'm thinking about my MawMaw and PawPaw and how much I miss them. They pretty much raised me and kept me safe and feeling well-loved -- my Angels.

  29. What a lovely story Cindy, and you are so right about those two lovely ladies looking alike. It's wonderful to have precious memories like this, and I love your little puppy!

  30. Isn't it interesting how we learn to value and appreciate such treasures, both people and things? I guess it is what keeps memories intact. Thanks for your visit. Do come again.

  32. Look at all of those vibrant beautiful colors.

I like your pup too. When my grandmother passed everyone wanted her candy dish (she always kept it full but you better not sneak it that thing w/o asking her first!). Of all the wonderful things she owned, that's the one thing everyone wanted most because it reminded them of her. :)

    Happy upcoming weekend to you!

  33. Those type gifts are the very best ever. It is the small things that are so important over bigger ones. I loved your post and the sotry of the dear lady and your granny.

  35. Love the pup and the teapot is very pretty.

My grandmother was fond of elephants so when she moved to California, I got a lot of them - ceramics, trinkets, and a lamp. I like looking at them and thinking of her.

I'm stopping by to say 'hi' from Katherine's Favorite Things Thursday - better late than never.

  36. Your post brought back such lovely memories. My eyes began to get moist as I read about the cherished porcelain pup that was your Granny's and your uncle passed on to you. How wonderful you found your Granny in Miss B!
Some 10 yrs ago when I was going to visit my grand-parents, my mom said 'take and pick up whatever you like'. I brought home a three metal vase (some 6" tall) that used to sit on my grand-pa's desk and my mom was like....'whhaaat'! There are so many things that I loved in her place and wonder where they are now. What makes me happy is that my Granny is still around at 94yrs, sharp and lovely as ever!
