I was so happy when my mother gave me Aunt Myrtle's corner hutch and thrilled beyond measure when she gave me Granny's dishes! My momma says that grandaddy purchased these dishes from a jewelry store and she was just a little girl when she remembers grandaddy bringing them home to Granny. I love having family pieces in my home, they bring back memories of special people and wonderful days gone by.
This cabinet is the perfect place for them. I am glad that this cupboard has glass on all sides and especially like that the cabinet lighting shines through each glass shelf to shine on all of Granny's dishes.
This china was my Granny's best. I have many wonderful memories of my grandparents and visiting them was one of my fondest childhood memories that I will always cherish. When the family would gather for meals in their little house, some would sit at the dining room table, some at the kitchen table and a few used trays in the living room. We shared some amazing meals on Granny's best. We never thought her home was too small or too cramped. Those days we realized how thankful we were to have a home and cherished the time we had with family. The size of home nor the furnishings were our concern, it was the blessing of having each other. So often I find myself pondering those times, they were so special. Granny's cooking, served on her pretty dishes, and all of the family together in her little home...it was absolutely PERFECT! Priceless!
My granny was so sweet, humble and my could she cook! What was my favorite dish you ask, well dessert of course! Granny's banana pudding was my favorite and it was yummy! She made it from scratch and it was cooked, no box pudding here. Once when asking for another serving of her banana puddin' I mistakenly asked for more puddin' pie. She got the biggest giggle out of that and it stuck. She would always smile when speaking about how I loved her puddin' pie! I sure do miss her.
My grandparents were amazingly sweet and I miss them more than words could ever express.
I feel so blessed to have been given Granny's dishes, thanks so much momma, I will treasure them all of my days!

Yes, this makes me remember sweet days gone by when my childrens grandparents on their fathers side would make a special meal every weekend and we were always welcome...no matter what time or day..warm memories.

I enjoyed reading your post about your grannie and her Puddin' Pie! (too cute) I grew up with my grandmother, and she is the best Southern cook, ever!!! :D She can cook everything, and she is a great baker. She is famous for her strawberry cake.

What lovely memories you are sharing with us today. The hutch is beautiful and the dishes equally so. Recently my Mother gave me her pink glass dishes from her wedding. my parents were marries 49 1/2 years ( my Father [passed away a year an a half ago). Every time I open my buffet to get a china teacup, I see them sitting there and it makes me smile.

ReplyDeleteI really like where you have put that lovely china cabinet. It's a very beautiful piece of furniture and your granny's dishes in there make it even more beautiful. Her dishes are gorgeous! They would probably be very expensive today, what wonderful memories you have of your granny's house.
I had a granny who lived in Tulsa, OK near some of the oil refineries. I remember large family get-togethers there when many of my cousins and aunts and uncles would gather there when we made the trip from Canada down to see them all.

ReplyDeleteI have my MIL's china, which is displayed in my china cabinet and we use on special occasions and holiday. Both of my girls (and even my DIL, but she's last on the list) are coveting this set and trying to decide what to do is going to be quite the dilemma when the day comes that I am ready to part with them!

ReplyDeleteI am soooooo glad I came by to visit. I saw your comment on My Romantic Home & thought "She's pretty & sounds really sweet" so I clicked & saw that you live in North Carolina. Yippeee I LOVE N. Carolina. My precious niece lives there. We love Ashville... And then your post touched a soft spot. I LOVE your dishes story. I had my precious Grandmothers "good" dishes too. But, I have 2 sons & 5 grandsons & my cousin has 1 daughter. No one loves dishes better than a girl & family dishes are SPECIAL! So, I kept 2 cup & saucers for memmory sake & with LOVE in my heart... I gave the whole set of Grandmother's "Good" dishes to my cousin & her daughter. Thank you for helping KNOW I made the right choice. But, I will tell you... It was a HARD one. But, I know Grandmother is smiling in HEAVEN.

What a wonderful family treasure your mom gave to you, and what wonderful memories your grandmother gave you as well. I only had one set of grandparents, but I have many memories of them. I have a pie safe that belonged to them that I treasure. Enjoyed seeing the photo of your grandparents.

I am so pleased that you have your grandmother's beautiful china! It is truly a treasure and such a gorgeous pattern, too. I have never encountered that pattern while browsing through antique shops. It must be very rare. The cabinet you have displayed the china in could not be more perfect for the sentimental collection.....and the lights really help to show it off!! I feel that your grandparents would be so pleased that you value their possessions. That is all any of us can hope for someday.
